The iconic white-collar thief, Lupin III, will make
his long-awaited return to the big screen with a new 2D animated film, the
franchise’s official Twitter account announced. The project,
tentatively titled “ Lupin the 3rd The Movie ,” will
premiere in Japan in 2025 and promises to be a completely original work.
The announcement came with an intriguing trailer that
concludes with the line, “ You haven’t met the real Lupin III yet ,”
piquing fans’ curiosity about what this new production has in store. The
creators have emphasized that it will be the first 2D animated feature
film in the franchise in almost 30 years, since the release of “Lupin III: Dead
or Alive” in 1996.
Although Lupin III fans have enjoyed several

the IIIrd: Jigen's Gravestone ,” “ Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon's
Blood Spray ,” and “ Lupin the IIIrd: Fujiko Mine's Lie ,”
these were shorter in length and did not qualify as feature films. Likewise,
the 2019 3D film, “ Lupin III THE FIRST ,” and the crossovers
“ Lupin III vs. Detective Conan The Movie ” (2013) and “ Lupin
III vs. Cat's Eye ” (2023) marked milestones in the history of the
franchise, but this new production promises to return to its roots.
