Publishing revealed
in the September issue of its Comic Ran magazine that the
novel Kunoichi Ninpōchō, written by the legendary Futaroh
Yamada, will have a manga adaptation by Atsushi Mizushima. The
first chapter will be published in the next issue of the journal, scheduled
for August 27 in Japan (UTC+2).
Classic
Ninja and Resistance Story
The plot
focuses on five kunoichi (ninja women) who carry Toyotomi
Hideyori's children in their wombs. In the midst of the chaos after
the siege of Osaka, and under the orders of the vassal Sanada Yukimura,
these warriors use their skills to escape the persecution imposed by Tokugawa
Ieyasu.
The
legacy of Futaroh Yamada
The work is
part of the author's extensive Ninpōchō literary saga, which
has served as inspiration for numerous films, manga, and anime. Kunoichi
Ninpōchō was previously adapted into a live-action film directed
by Sadao Nakajima in 1964.
Among
Yamada's most recognized works is also Makai Tenshō, originally
published as Oboro Ninpōchō between 1964 and 1965. This story
inspired the Ninja Resurrection anime in 1998, and was adapted
into the manga Jū ~Ninpō Makai Tenshō~ by Masaki
Segawa between 2012 and 2018.
Basilisk:
another pillar of the ninja universe
Another of
Yamada's most influential titles is Kōga Ninpōchō (The Ninja
Chronicles of Kōga), which inspired Segawa's Basilisk manga.
This work had an anime adaptation in 2005 and a live-action
film that same year under the title SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade.
The Basilisk franchise
expanded in 2018 with a sequel titled Basilisk: The
Ouka Ninja Scrolls, based on the novels by Masaki Yamada with
illustrations by Segawa. The anime adaptation premiered in January 2018 and was
available on anime platforms with dubbing and subtitles. For its part, the
manga version was published between 2017 and 2019.
