Distributor Tokuma Shoten presented a new trailer for the 4K remaster of Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago), the enigmatic work directed by Mamoru Oshii and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano, originally released in 1985.

Screenings at international festivals

The project had its world premiere on May 20 during the Cinéma de la Plage section of the Cannes Film Festival. Subsequently, the film will be presented at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) in the "Revivals" category, with screenings scheduled for September 27 and 30, as well as October 4 and 6. It will also be part of the Fantastic Fest squad in Austin, Texas, from September 18-25.

In Spain, the work will arrive at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, which will be held from October 9 to 19. In addition, GKIDS confirmed that it will screen the remaster in theaters in North America starting November 19.

Remaster details

The restoration process was carried out from a new 35 mm scan, recovering the characteristic visual atmosphere of Amano and Oshii. The announcement of the remaster was made in May 2024, and the French company Gebeka International acquired the international sales rights. GKIDS will also release the film in home format.

The importance of Angel's Egg

Released as an OVA in 1985 and produced by Studio DEEN, the film has become a cult work for its minimalist narrative and deep symbolic charge. The direction was in charge of Mamoru Oshii, who also wrote the script in creative collaboration with Yoshitaka Amano, in charge of the artistic design. The music was composed by Yoshihiro Kanno, adding to the dreamlike atmosphere that characterizes the project.

A long-awaited return

After decades without proper distribution in the West – where it had only been shown in limited screenings, such as the one held in New York in September 2023 by the Japan Society – Angel's Egg will finally receive a new life thanks to this 4K remaster. As part of the broadcast strategy, HBO Max will soon add the film to its catalog in collaboration with GKIDS.
