More than a decade after RebellionPuella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising is dated, has a full trailer, and has a theme song. The official sequel to the 2013 film released its main trailer revealing that FictionJunction, composer Yuki Kajiura's solo project, performs the theme song "Kanata." The theatrical release is confirmed for August 28, 2026.

The full trailer features new footage from the film along with the first listen to "Kanata," completing the musical landscape of a project that since 2011 has built part of its identity on Kajiura's music. The film closes a loop that began when SHAFT hinted at new work in the franchise through a cinematic concept in 2015. The official announcement came in April 2021, and since then the film accumulated multiple delays: from winter 2024 to winter 2025, then to February 2026, and finally to August 28, 2026 after an additional delay in January due to production circumstances.

The direction is being handled by Yukihiro Miyamoto, with the bulk of the original team returning, including head director Akiyuki Shinbo, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus, and the SHAFT studio. Original creators Magica Quartet, original character designer Ume Aoki, animation character designer Junichiro Taniguchi, and alternative space design group Gekidan Inu Curry also return.

About Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a twelve-episode original anime series produced by SHAFT under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo that aired in 2011. The story follows Madoka Kaname and her friends as they uncover the truth behind the contract that turns them into magical girls. The series redefined the genre of magical girls and became one of the most influential works of anime of the last decade. The first cinematic sequel came in 2013 with Rebellion, which in turn closed with a twist that left the door open to exactly what now, more than a decade later, is about to hit theaters.
