The CloverWorks studio panel at the Anime Expo finally cleared up the doubts about one of its most enigmatic original projects. After a preliminary announcement in 2024 that suffered multiple delays, the production committee confirmed through a spectacular trailer that Grotesqq will officially hit theaters on November 6. This original feature film will not follow a conventional narrative structure, but will be presented as an anthology divided into three totally independent stories that clash in tone and style.
To unify this peculiar visual mosaic, the chair
of director and main screenwriter is occupied by the veteran Atsushi
Nishigori, whose massive creative stamp we already know thanks to his work
on works such as Darling in the Franxx. The three stories that make
up the film are entitled "ÆLIENS", "4649GIRL" and
"NOCTURN: EN CETTE NUIT GROTESQUE". All this technical deployment
does not fall solely on CloverWorks, but also has the monstrous financial muscle
of JOEN, a production company established in conjunction with
Aniplex, Wit Studio and Shueisha, which guarantees the highest level of
animation quality for the big screen.
Unprecedented narrative and musical chaos
While the promo video gave us a first taste of
the frenetic opening theme and color palette of each segment, the staff still
has several heavy cards up their sleeves. During its early stages of
production, the creative team anticipated that this anthology would feature the
participation of fourteen lead voice actors and an absurd catalog of
thirty-five different musical acts to set the scene for the three universes.
This aggressive combination of talents seeks to ensure that each short film has
an audiovisual identity that contrasts violently with the rest of the footage.
