Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (or simply Re: Zero) was one of the most popular isekai anime series of the past decade, but after its first season aired in 2016, there was no news about the production of a second until much, much later. Turns out it was a troubled road, and even that's why fans had two OVAs released in the period. During an interview included in the Blu-ray / DVD release of the OVA Memory Snow in Japan, the producers revealed that they really just wanted a break.
That's right, Kadokawa producer Sho Tanaka; White Fox producer Tsunaki Yoshikawa and MF Bunko J magazine editor Masahito Ikemoto revealed in that interview why it took two years for an animated release based on the series, and much more for the second season. In short, the staff was exhausted after the first season.
Tired of Re: Zero?
As Tanaka explained, Re: Zero was not seen as a series with a future, unlike what it looks like now. "It's a story that no one thought would be successful enough for fans to want a sequel, other than the people who worked directly on the production. After the first season ended and we looked at the numbers, a lot of people commented, "From the beginning we thought it wouldn't sell," so it was a satisfying turn of events. "
Yoshikawa revealed during the interview that discussions on the production of a second season did not begin until 2017, a year after the anime ended, and Tanaka revealed that they could not move forward with this until the decision was confirmed, “… if not There is a production decision in between for a sequel, so no matter how much the studio believes it will be successful, it cannot start making it, which is why it took two years from the first season to the launch of the first OVA. ”
Yoshikawa added that he noted back then how tired the production team was at White Fox Studios after the first season: “After producing 25 episodes for the main series, it is entirely true that we were exhausted. In fact, we were in a state where we didn't want to know anything about Re: Zero for a while. ”
They explained why the first OVA had a much simpler story. Working on Re: Zero had worn down the team and a rest period was completely necessary to get back on track. Unfortunately, the second season that was slated to premiere this month is now slated for the summer, so fans will have to wait a little longer.
