Goro Miyazaki, the son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, recently commented on his upcoming 3D CG feature film based on Diana Wynne Jones' book Aya to Majo during a press conference. Miyazaki described it as "a project that I want everyone to see right now," and mentioned that it was mostly produced by the studio's young staff. "For this, I did not consult the superiors (at Ghibli) at all," he said.

Miyazaki also described the heroine Earwig as follows: “She is a type of heroine who has not been represented in Ghibli until now, and is a very strong girl who does her best to live life just as she wants to live it. Although he feels a lot of pressure on her and has to overcome many things, he still remains brilliant. "

Finally, Miyazaki highlighted the fact that the film is made entirely in 3DCG animation, and mentioned: “I was the only one of all the people in Studio Ghibli who knows these animation techniques, so I had to carry out this project without being able to consult to the most experienced members. Hayao Miyazaki told me I could do it, and producer Toshio Suzuki encouraged me, mentioning that it seemed like a good idea, but after that, they left me alone. It was practically abandoned, so I had to do this project with the youngest staff in the studio and I didn't consult the oldest ones. "

The feature film adapts the novel of the same name written by Diana Wynne Jones and will last 82 minutes. Its premiere is scheduled on television for the upcoming winter season. Another of Diana Wynne Jones' novels that inspired a Studio Ghibli movie was Howl no Ugoku Shiro.

Production team

The direction is the responsibility of Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, and this will be the first 3D CG animated film in the studio's history. Additionally, Hayao Miyazaki is credited for planning and development, while Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki is credited for production.

Synopsis of Aya to Majo

Not all orphans love living in the St. Morwald orphanage, but Earwig does. She gets everything she wants, when she wants it, and it's been that way ever since she came to the orphanage as an abandoned baby. But all this changes when Bella Yaga and Mandrake arrive at St. Morwald disguised as adoptive parents. Earwig is brought to her house filled with mysterious rooms, potions, and sorcery books.

Most of the children would have fled in terror from a house like this ... but this is not the case again with Earwig who, using his own intelligence and with the help of a talking cat, will decide to show the witch who is boss there.
