Criticism rains down on the decline in Komi-san's animation quality

Various negative opinions were shared on comment forums in Japan towards a marked decline in the design and animation quality of the second season of the Komi-san wa anime, Komyushou Desu ( Komi Can't Communicate ), especially in the last two episodes. For this article we have compiled these comments and the screenshots attached to them:

  • « Komi-san's drawing goes from bad to worse... ».

  • « Will the schedule of episode 22 be ok? The scene where Komi-san and Tadano-kun are handing out the chocolates was a bit better, but I have a feeling the entire episode aired without the supervisor's corrections coming through at all. It's a shame the drawings didn't live up to the director's intentions, considering how much fun Komi-san has built up to this point ."

  • « It's hard to watch because the cartoons are so bad at a level that makes all the effort from last week's broadcast until now go to waste, and every time I see it again, I wonder why they gave the approval good to these drawings. It made me very sad to see the faces of my favorite characters so poorly drawn ».

  • « I have seen the tenth episode of this season of Komi-san. What went wrong in this episode…? I've been watching it since the first season, but it's the first time that the drawings are so bad ».

  • « There are also scenes where the characters seem slightly different than usual, probably as a result of the instability of the drawings. The first, Komi-san, who is not too shapely, could be a good choice ».

  • « This week's Komi-san episode is a good Valentine's episode, but it's a pity that only this time the drawings have collapsed… There are many mistakes, and the most notable are: the note that says “Good morning” shows the closed notebook, the white stain on the cake is horrible and it's hard to tell if it's meringue or steam, Yamai's chocolate is a disaster ».

  • « So….I'm not the only one who has noticed a huge drop in animation/illustration quality in moments since the 10th episode of the second season of Komi-san, am I? One example is when Komi actually looked like Seto Kaiba in a wig. Also, he shows a message in his notebook and in the next shot the notebook is closed ».

  • « Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari is not as bad as Komi-san, although I am concerned about the character's movements, straight-faced emotions, and close-ups. To be honest, I was so worried about the poorly done drawings that I didn't even pay attention to Komi-san's stories last week and this week ."
  • This week's Komi-san episode was so shaky drawing-wise that I honestly couldn't watch the first half . The second half seemed to improve, but I still feel that the animation is not up to what the director wants to do. Well, I hope it will be corrected on the Blu-ray ».
  • Komi-san's drawings were good at first, and I was hooked partly because of that, so looking at last week's and this week's broadcasts, there's more than a sense of disappointment because the original was so good ."

Regarding the reason for the decline of animation, fans have pointed out that Akane Hirota has not been able to participate in directing animation recently ( as we have pointed out in the articles where we collect illustrations to celebrate the weekly episodes ), which strangely coincides with the moment when the quality of drawing and animation took a nosedive.

In fact, it is strange that since the tenth episode none of the animation directors of the first nine episodes have been listed, which were Asami Hayakawa , Akane Hirota and Akane Ogawa . From the tenth episode, directors from outside Japan are listed, such as Yeon-Ju Baek , Hyeon-Ju Song , Weifeng Du , Liang Chen , Xulong Wei and Won-Ha Jo , which would indicate that OLM has relied too much on subcontracting to these last few episodes.
