Due to the global expansion that manga and anime culture has
had in recent years, it was inevitable that it would reach communities with
values or visions different from what is customary in Japan. The latter is
what causes constant controversies towards this culture in different “more
reserved” countries, such as Australia. However, a recent situation has
changed the entire paradigm because it does not involve a country, but an
entire community: the fans of K-Pop (popular music from South Korea).
Recently, multiple K-Pop idols, among which we can
mention Soobin de TXT , Taeyong from NCT, Woozi from SEVENTEEN and Sakura of LE
SSERAFIM, have joined a “black list” for having made a statement that many
of the K-Pop fans found it “unforgivable”: they said they watched and
even recommended the anime Made in Abyss.
Made in Abyss is not a series that has gone without
problems before all this. Leaving aside its adorable theme starring
children that quickly turns dark, its author, Akihito Tsukushi has
not helped much to clear up the controversies either.
An interview with the author went immensely viral after he revealed that he keeps a replica of a girl's torso that he uses as a reference for drawing. He also mentioned that he collects objects such as brushes of teeth and school backpacks to be able to correctly represent a homely girl.
We could say that they are things that any person
dedicated to the plastic arts, and even the author himself did not feel ashamed
to say in a television interview. Unfortunately, not everyone world
looked at him like that. All this, added to the theme of Made in Abyss,
led many users on social networks to say that the author is a “pedophile.”
This then is the cause of the controversy that has recently
arisen. Many K-Pop fans (although mostly female fans) began to criticize
the idols who said they had enjoyed Made in Abyss, stating that this was the
same as “supporting a pedophile.” Apparently there is usually an
“active war” between the fandoms of each of the groups, and they take advantage
of any “error” to attack other groups on social networks and make their
favorite stand out.
Now we just have to wait for the controversy to go away
on its own, but why don't we look at some of the more peculiar comments
about this?
- «Soobin
never recommended it, he said he was watching it and that it was a
psychological horror anime not suitable for children. There are many
morally gray media that want to claim that she recommended it, but that
was not the case ".
- «Is
this why? Is this why Made in Abyss is trending? For K-Pop fans crying?».
- «Made
in Abyss is one of the best animes I've seen in recent years. I love the
characters and although it has an incredibly dark story, it is balanced
with some of the best moments I have ever witnessed».
- «So,
these K-Pop fans just saw some images on Google and have no idea what Made
in Abyss is actually about?».
- «I
can feel that this is like reviving the old spirits that walked in the
Tumblr communities, it is as if they have finally come out of the dungeon
where they were locked up ».
- «Cancelling
K-Pop artists seems to be the only thing K-Pop fans have done right to
date» .
- «No
one hates K-Pop singers, only K-Pop fans themselves».
- «Hordes
of teenage K-Pop fans on Twitter are having a stroke because some of their
favorite celebrities said they are fans of Made in Abyss, how funny<
/span>».
- «Hello
K-Pop fans, instead of canceling Made in Abyss, I recommend canceling Oshi
no Ko, surrounded by a series of disturbing things such as incest,
promiscuity, homicide , manipulation, the dark side of idols. Or maybe
there are no balls to mess with someone very popular? ».
- «K-Pop
fans canceling idols for watching Made in Abyss is the craziest shit I've
seen recently, and it's incredibly funny how serious they are about it.
It's as if they believe they are going to achieve something.
- «Made
in Abyss is trending because the empty heads of K-Pop fans are going crazy
for the tenth time today when they discover that some K-Pop stars like it
I liked anime and manga».
- «I
think I'm going to watch Made in Abyss just to annoy the K-Pop fans».
- «It's
funny to see K-Pop fans freak out because a K-Pop idol literally just said
that he had been watching and reading Made in Abyss, as if he had
committed a crime. I can't imagine how horrible it must be to have people
like this as your fans».
- «I'm
sorry, but let me get to the point. People are mad at this guy simply
because he said he had seen Made in Abyss. That's all. One of the most
popular and celebrated anime of 2017. He didn't even say his opinion on
it, he just said that it was on the list of animes he had recently
seen ».
