During the most recent edition of New York Comic Con,
the winners of the prestigious Harvey Awards, which honor the best works in
comics and sequential art, were announced. This year, Ryoko Kui’s manga
“ Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in
Dungeon)” took home the award for Best Manga. Representing
the author, editor Thomas McAlister accepted the award, and shared a message
from Kui, who mentioned that this recognition inspires and motivates her as she
works on her next series.
Additionally, it was revealed that manga
creator Akira Toriyama, famous for works such as “Dragon Ball,” will be
posthumously inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame , alongside
four other new members. Among the nominees in the Best Manga category were
other notable works such as Mokumokuren’s “ The Summer Hikaru Died ,”
Kamome Shirahama’s “ Witch Hat Atelier ,” Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa
Abe’s “ Frieren: Beyond Journey's End ,” and Junji Ito’s “ Soichi:
Junji Ito Story Collection ,” among others. However, it was “Dungeon
Meshi” that managed to stand out in this edition, cementing itself as a
favorite with audiences and critics.
In other categories, the video game “Demon
Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Hinokami Chronicles” , based on the
popular manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, and the musical “Attack on Titan:
The Musical” , based on the work of Hajime Isayama, were
nominated in the Best Adaptation category, although the award finally went to
X-Men '97.
The Harvey Awards introduced a Best Manga category in
2018, with Kabi Nagata’s “My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness” as the first
winner. Since then, titles such as Kohei Horikoshi’s “My Hero
Academia,” Kamome Shirahama’s “Witch Hat Atelier,” and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s
“Chainsaw Man,” which dominated this category for the past three years, have
received the nod.
