This
Sunday, IGN surprised fans by exclusively sharing the first two minutes of the
opening episode of Nyaight of the Living Cat, the animated adaptation of the
manga created by Hawkman and Mecha-Roots. This brief but intense glimpse
reveals a post-apocalyptic world invaded by zombie cats, in what promises to be
one of the strangest and most adorable series of the season.
Release
Dates: Japan and Spain
The anime
will premiere in Japan through the Abema Premium service on July 6 at 11:00 PM
(UTC+9), which corresponds to 4:00 PM in Spain (UTC+2). It will then air on
free-to-air television on July 7 at 10:00 PM (i.e., July 8 at 2:00 AM) on TV
Tokyo. It can also be seen on BS TV Tokyo, TV Hokkaido, Animax, and other
streaming platforms.
For
international audiences, Crunchyroll will begin streaming the anime on July 6
in regions including the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Sony
Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution in Japan and the rest of Asia.
Special
Screenings and Exclusive Premieres
As part of
its promotional campaign, the anime will have an advance screening at Anime
Expo on July 3 on the Crunchyroll Stage at the JW Marriott. Additionally, the
Fantasia International Film Festival, held in Montreal, will present episodes 3
and 4 for the world premiere as part of its official selection.
On the
musical side, the opening theme song "Cat City" will be performed by
the legendary band THE YELLOW MONKEY, while the ending theme song
"Matatabi" will be performed by the punk group WANIMA. As if that
weren't enough, vocalist Heidi Shepherd (of Butcher Babies) lends her guttural
vocals to the main "Theme Song," accompanied by lyrics by Ayuko
Saito, composition by Kōji Endō, and guitar by Marty Friedman.
Educational
Segments and High-Caliber Production
Each
episode will conclude with an original segment offering tips on living with
cats, accompanied by additional information on the anime's official Japanese
website, which will be updated weekly.
The general
direction is in the hands of the legendary Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, As
the Gods Will), while Tomohiro Kamitani (MIX Season 2) directs at OLM studio.
The script is supervised by Shingo Irie (Golden Kamuy), the character designs
are by Takao Maki (Blue Period), and the music is by veteran Kōji Endō. The
production is under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Slow
Curve.

The manga
Nyaight of the Living Cat debuted in October 2020 in Mag Garden's Comic Garden
magazine. Its sixth compiled book volume was released in Japan on February 21,
while Seven Seas Entertainment distributed the fifth volume in English on
October 22.
With zombie
cats, explosive rock, and a top-notch creative team, Nyaight of the Living Cat
is shaping up to be one of this summer's most curious and adorable surprises.
