This Sunday, IGN surprised fans by exclusively sharing the first two minutes of the opening episode of Nyaight of the Living Cat, the animated adaptation of the manga created by Hawkman and Mecha-Roots. This brief but intense glimpse reveals a post-apocalyptic world invaded by zombie cats, in what promises to be one of the strangest and most adorable series of the season.

Release Dates: Japan and Spain

The anime will premiere in Japan through the Abema Premium service on July 6 at 11:00 PM (UTC+9), which corresponds to 4:00 PM in Spain (UTC+2). It will then air on free-to-air television on July 7 at 10:00 PM (i.e., July 8 at 2:00 AM) on TV Tokyo. It can also be seen on BS TV Tokyo, TV Hokkaido, Animax, and other streaming platforms.

For international audiences, Crunchyroll will begin streaming the anime on July 6 in regions including the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle distribution in Japan and the rest of Asia.

Special Screenings and Exclusive Premieres

As part of its promotional campaign, the anime will have an advance screening at Anime Expo on July 3 on the Crunchyroll Stage at the JW Marriott. Additionally, the Fantasia International Film Festival, held in Montreal, will present episodes 3 and 4 for the world premiere as part of its official selection.

On the musical side, the opening theme song "Cat City" will be performed by the legendary band THE YELLOW MONKEY, while the ending theme song "Matatabi" will be performed by the punk group WANIMA. As if that weren't enough, vocalist Heidi Shepherd (of Butcher Babies) lends her guttural vocals to the main "Theme Song," accompanied by lyrics by Ayuko Saito, composition by Kōji Endō, and guitar by Marty Friedman.

Educational Segments and High-Caliber Production

Each episode will conclude with an original segment offering tips on living with cats, accompanied by additional information on the anime's official Japanese website, which will be updated weekly.

The general direction is in the hands of the legendary Takashi Miike (Ichi the Killer, As the Gods Will), while Tomohiro Kamitani (MIX Season 2) directs at OLM studio. The script is supervised by Shingo Irie (Golden Kamuy), the character designs are by Takao Maki (Blue Period), and the music is by veteran Kōji Endō. The production is under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Slow Curve.

A manga that conquers with a feline pace

The manga Nyaight of the Living Cat debuted in October 2020 in Mag Garden's Comic Garden magazine. Its sixth compiled book volume was released in Japan on February 21, while Seven Seas Entertainment distributed the fifth volume in English on October 22.

With zombie cats, explosive rock, and a top-notch creative team, Nyaight of the Living Cat is shaping up to be one of this summer's most curious and adorable surprises.
