The August
issue of Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine, published by
Shogakukan, reported Friday that the Dai Dark manga,
created by Q Hayashida, will enter a brief two-issue hiatus. The
author will focus on working on the next compilation volume in
the series. The manga is scheduled to resume publication in the magazine's
November issue, which will go on sale in October 2025.
A dark
and wacky sci-fi story
The
publisher Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in
English and describes it as follows: Zaha Sanko's body has a
power as great as it is terrifying: they say that whoever obtains her bones
will be able to fulfill any wish, even become the ruler of the universe.
But Sanko
is just a teenager with his own interests, and he doesn't plan to let every
galactic criminal tear him apart. Together with his skeletal partner Avakian,
he will use his dark powers to defend himself against constant assassination
attempts while searching for the person responsible for the curse on his
bones... because killing him could be the only way out. (And then you can
celebrate with your favorite spaghetti.)
A legacy
that began with Dorohedoro
Q
Hayashida released Dai
Dark in March 2019 on Monthly Shonen Sunday. The first
volume was published in November of the same year, and the eighth
volume was released in October 2024. The author is also
recognized for her work Dorohedoro, a science fiction manga that
debuted in 1999 in the magazine Monthly Ikki. After the closure of
this magazine in 2014, the series was moved to Hibana and
then, in 2017, to Monthly Shonen Sunday. The manga ended in
September 2018 with a total of 23 volumes, the last of which was
released in November of that same year.
The work
inspired an anime adaptation that premiered in 2020. In North America, Viz
Media began distributing Dorohedoro digitally in 2009
through its SigIKKI portal, and subsequently published the
print version from 2010 to 2019.
