Bandai Namco Announces Echoes of Aincrad, Sword Art Online's New Action RPG

For the first time in the franchise's history, the player won't be Kirito: he'll be one of the 10,000 caught up in the deadly MMO. Bandai Namco Entertainment revealed Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG set in the Sword Art Online universe, developed by Game Studio. The game will arrive on July 9 in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and on July 10 on PC via Steam; in the West, all platforms receive the game on July 10.

The Japanese trailer presents the game as a mockumentary that looks back at the so-called "SAO incident", with the protagonist as a survivor being interviewed years later. The video includes appearances by cosplayer and streamer Enako, writer and gamer personality Mafia Kajita, and VTuber Tsuna Nekota.

Echoes of Aincrad Details

The game offers an unprecedented experience in the saga: the player creates their own hero from scratch, chooses their equipment and combat style, and explores the floating castle of Aincrad alongside well-known characters such as Kirito and Asuna. Combat is real-time, with sword skills, stamina bar, and reaction-based systems reminiscent of Soulslike titles. There's also a synergy system with a customizable AI companion in tactics and gear.

Available editions

The game will have four editions. The Standard Edition includes the base game. The Deluxe Edition adds expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early access to Death Game mode, in which the game deletes the save game upon death — a mode that is typically unlocked only after finishing the game for the first time. The Ultimate Edition includes all of the above plus special "Unanswered//butterfly" content, a special anime, digital soundtrack, digital art, and an exclusive armor pack. The Aincrad Edition, exclusive to the Bandai Namco store, adds physical merchandise: beanie, decorative scroll, patches, and stickers.

About the original work

Reki Kawahara started the Sword Art Online web novel in 2001 and serialized it between 2002 and 2008 on his personal site. Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint published a print edition starting in 2009, closing the original story with the "Alicization" arc in volume 18 in 2016. The franchise continued with the "Moon Cradle" arcs in 2017 and "Unital Ring" in 2018, and is currently in its 28th volume. The series has spawned manga, spin-off novels, several anime seasons, a film, and a proposed live-action adaptation. The spin-off Sword Art Online: Progressive also has two animated films of its own.
