If you thought that the quota of protagonists related to medicine was already full with apothecaries and pharmacists reincarnated, get ready to make room for them. The publisher Kadokawa has just brightened up our week by confirming that The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom (known in Japanese as Gekkakoku Kiiden) will have its own anime series adaptation for television. The announcement fell like a glove on May 22, coinciding exactly with the release of volume 15 of the manga, and included a beautiful commemorative illustration by its creator, Toru Himuka.

To bring to life this fascinating mix of shoujo romance, medicine and palace betrayals, the production committee did not skimp when it came to putting together the main cast. Fortunately, they have already confirmed the four talents who will lead this story:

  • Rina Hidaka as Koyo
Known for bringing Filo to life in The Rising of the Shield Hero and Silica in Sword Art Online, perfect for the role of our energetic and talented doctor.
  • Takeo Otsuka as Keiun
Recognized worldwide for being the voice of Aqua Hoshino in Oshi no Ko and Jinshi in The Apothecary Diaries, ideal to play the crown prince.
  • Taito Ban as Shingdam
The very same and broken Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling bringing all his acting weight to the cast.
  • Shoya Chiba as Shiei
Hailed by the otaku community as the cold, calculating voice of Kiyotaka Ayanokoji in Classroom of the Elite.

Scalpels, political intrigue and the magic of Studio Elle

To make the court dramas and complex surgeries look spectacular, the project was left in the hands of Studio Elle under the direction of Koïchiro Kuroda. The scripts are being polished by Risa Mizuno (who signs under the pseudonym Aki Mizuki), while Akira Ono is in charge of the character designs, ensuring that the beautiful traditional costumes shine on screen. In addition, the soundtrack promises to give us goosebumps thanks to the talent of Shiho Terada, a veteran who already showed us her magic in the Precure franchise.

Synopsis of The Eccentric Doctor of the Moon Flower Kingdom

The story transports us to the exotic Kingdom of the Flowers of the Moon, a Chinese-style empire where the famous medicinal baths are considered the absolute pinnacle of treatments against diseases and wounds. However, during a regional inspection of Crown Prince Keiun, a young woman named Koyo breaks all the molds by successfully performing an amazing and advanced suture surgery right in front of her eyes. From that moment on, the fates of the brilliant doctor and the prince are intertwined. Together, and backed by loyal allies, they must face a whirlwind of dark conspiracies, absurd superstitions, and deep-seated imperial traditions that threaten to destroy their country from the shadows.
