Yoko Taro finally explains the mysterious message of "To be continued..." in NieR: Automata

When we saw the "To be continued..." at the end of the emotional video celebrating the ten million copies sold of NieR: Automata, almost all of us lost our minds thinking that Square Enix would finally announce the long-awaited sequel. However, eccentric director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito recently decided to talk to Famitsu magazine to bring the community down from their cloud, revealing that this whole mystery has a much simpler and more commercial explanation than we initially imagined.

The Harsh Truth Behind the Mystery

Saito was totally honest and confessed that it was his idea to demand that that exact phrase be included at the end of the footage. According to the producer, letting the celebration die on its ninth anniversary felt like a very unsatisfying closure for such a giant work, so he felt the absolute need to leave the door open for its tenth celebration. For his part, true to his lifelong acid humor, the creator of the giant mask joked that the message basically means that they are not done and that they will continue to squeeze the franchise to generate more profits, making it clear that for now there is no official project confirmed in development.

The fear of disappointing the public

This revealing interview also brought to light the hilarious anecdote of his recent April Fool's Day joke. The team confessed that they spent hours debating how to write the fake announcement for a new project without players taking it seriously or ending up completely frustrated. In the end, they chose to use invented kanji that made no logical sense to announce a supposed development, to such an extent that the director himself admitted with a laugh that to this day not even he knows what the word they ended up publishing on their official social networks really means.

Although the possibility of a major new title is not completely ruled out going forward, it is clear that the masterminds behind the franchise simply want to keep their audience's interest alive until the imminent tenth anniversary in 2027. Knowing that this team of creatives loves to constantly play with the minds and emotions of their followers.
