It happens
that lately the sports genre seems obsessed with the duality of selfish
strikers or unbreakable volleyball teams, forgetting that in the nineties the
real terror was lived dodging balls in the face. The dodgeball claims its place
on the field, and this time the new generation is willing to leave no puppet
with its head. The animated adaptation of Hono no Tokyujo Dodge
Danko Dodgeball (Hono no Tokyujo Dodge Danko) marked on
the calendar on Monday that its first episode will officially premiere on July
6. Those who are in Japan will be able to see an exclusive preview of the
first two chapters on June 21 at the Shinjuku Wald 9 cinemas
in Tokyo. All this announcement came hand in hand with a new promotional video
on their website that lets us hear the energy of the opening performed by the
group Momoiro Clover Z, contrasting with the ending by the idol
unit iRis.

The Production Team
Behind the
deadly matches we have the CUE studio, with Hiroshi Ikehata sitting
in the director's chair. The overall script is written by Kazuho Hyodo,
ensuring that the comedic pace doesn't wane in the middle of the competition,
and the character designs that maintain that classic essence are courtesy
of Narihito Sekikawa, who also serves as chief animation director.
Today's update added several heavyweights to the technical team: Masahiro
Sato takes over the art direction, Ryo Kimura takes
over the color design, and Yasunori Iwasaki along with Ren
Tsukagoshi make up the frenetic soundtrack that we will hear under the
careful supervision of sound director Yuichi Imaizumi.
About
Hono no Tokyujo Dodge Danko
If the
protagonist's last name sounds familiar to you and you already comb some gray
hair, it's because you're looking at the direct sequel to Hono no
Tokyuji Dodge Danpei himself, that iconic manga by Tetsuhiro
Koshita that dominated the industry between 1989 and 1995. This new
stage of the franchise began serialization in November 2022 through the Weekly
CoroCoro Comic website, recently publishing its sixth compilation
volume under the Shogakukan label in August 2025.
The premise
is still a full-blooded spokon, but this time he passes the torch
to Danko Ichigeki, the daughter of the legendary Danpei. Her only goal in life
is to form the strongest dodgeball team of the current era, taking on tough
opponents while forging unbreakable bonds with her teammates. Basically, it's
an injection of pure retro adrenaline mixed with the modern sensibilities of
sports anime, proving that some formulas never really age.
