The Japanese animation industry continues to dig through the immense web reading portals to find its next fantasy franchise. This time, the production committee of Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures gave the green light to the animated adaptation of Heir to a Monstermancer (known in its original language as Mamono Tsukai no Musume). The official announcement was backed by a first promotional image that introduces us to this peculiar protagonist duo, anticipating a dynamic full of friction and fights for survival.
To transfer this adventure from paper to
screen, the reins of the project fell into the hands of the offices of project
No.9. The director's chair is occupied by Chihiro Kumano, who will have the
responsibility of giving narrative fluidity to the story. In the writers' room,
Satoru Sugizawa takes over direct supervision of the scripts, while Akane
Kasasagi has the difficult task of adapting illustrator Shirabii's original
character designs to look flawless in motion. One detail that will undoubtedly
make readers happy is that the voice actors will reprise the exact same roles
they played in the audio drama released in early 2024.
From web portal to physical print
Far from being a rookie story, the work written
by Damu Amato has a long history on the internet. Its publication
started in 2016 within the gigantic catalog of the Shosetsuka ni Naro site,
remaining active and gaining traction until 2024. Its quality earned it the
grand prize at the second edition of the Drecom Media Awards, which prompted
its immediate leap into print light novels. The license is in full expansion,
adding a manga version illustrated by Yu Sato that will debut this September
and even a promotional webtoon financed by multiple companies
to attract even more readers.
This whole odyssey begins when Hakura, an
adventurer with many years of experience, almost loses his life after facing a
lethal hydra. Just at the moment of greatest desperation, he is rescued by
Leen, a young woman with the very rare ability to tame any monster regardless
of its threat level. Out of a huge debt of gratitude, Hakura decides to
accompany her on her journey, forming a team where arguments are as frequent as
battles.
