Anime Expo panels continue to trigger heavyweight revelations for the industry. The production committee behind the animated adaptation of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't A Guy at All (known in its original language as Kininatteru Hito ga Otoko ja Nakatta) took advantage of the Crunchyroll stage to release its first promotional video. The trailer not only served to show off its distinctive aesthetic and musical theme, but also officially confirmed that this little gem of Sapphic romance will land on television during the month of January 2027.

CloverWorks and a Historic Music License

To ensure that the jump to the screen captures the visual essence of the work, the renowned studio CloverWorks took absolute control of the animation. The director's chair is occupied by the experienced Masashi Ishihama, who will work alongside Rino Yamazaki in the structuring of the scripts. The spectacular strokes of the source material were adapted by the talented Kanna Hirayama in the character design. But the committee's master move came in the sound section: the iconic song "Breed" by the American band Nirvana will be used as the official opening song, an extremely rare and expensive luxury in the world of anime.

A success forged purely on the internet

It is worth remembering that this original manga did not need the gigantic printed magazines to shine from day one. Its creator, Sumiko Arai, began publishing the chapters directly on social networks in April 2022. The organic traction was so beastly that Kadokawa quickly stepped in to serialize it and publish it in physical format, reaching an impressive 1.4 million copies in circulation today. With awards such as first place at the 2023 Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards, the peculiar story about a high school student who falls madly in love with the mysterious record store clerk (unaware that he is actually her classmate) is guaranteed to be a success.
