A press release from Bandai Namco Filmworks
announced that the “ Ghost in the Shell ”
franchise will have a new television anime that will premiere in 2026 in
Japan. The most important detail is that Science SARU studios will
be in charge of the production of this new anime tentatively titled “ The
Ghost in the Shell .” Meanwhile, Bandai Namco Filmworks , Kodansha , Science
SARU and Production IG make up the production
committee for this project.
The most recent installment of the franchise was
“ Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 The Last Human “, a compilation
film of the second season of “ Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 “,
which premiered in November 2023 in theaters in Japan. Before that, the first
season premiered on Netflix globally in April 2020. The series
maintained the cyberpunk theme that characterizes the franchise, but with a
3DCG animation that most did not like.
On the other hand, “ Ghost in the Shell ”
is a manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow that was
first published in 1989. The franchise has inspired multiple anime adaptations,
most by Production IG , starting with a successful film in
1995 under the direction of Mamoru Oshii . This is considered
one of the best anime films of all time, leading to recognition for the name of
the director, the studio, and the franchise as a whole.
Sinopsis of Ghost in the Shell
In the year 2029, the city of Niihama
has become a technologically advanced metropolis. Thanks to great advances in
cybernetics, its citizens can replace their limbs with robotic parts. The world
is now more interconnected than ever, and the city's Public Safety Section 9 is
responsible for combating corruption, terrorism and other dangerous threats in
the wake of this shift toward globalization. Tenacious Major Motoko Kusanagi of
Section 9 heads a case involving a mysterious hacker known only as the
" Puppet Master ," who leaves a trail of victims stripped
of their memories.
Like many in this futuristic world,
Puppet Master 's body is almost entirely robotic, giving him
incredible power. As Motoko and her subordinates track down the enigmatic
criminal, other parties - including Section 6 - begin to get involved, forcing
her to confront the extremely complicated nature of the case. Reflecting on
various philosophical questions, such as the meaning of her own life, Motoko
soon realizes that the one who will provide her with those answers is none
other than the Puppet Master himself.
