During
the AnimeJapan 2025 event , the production of a third season
for the new anime adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki 's manga ,
" Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan ", was
announced. The statement did not list production details, so it is unknown when
this new sequel will premiere.
In the
meantime, here are the details of the franchise so far:
- " Rurouni Kenshin "
(also known as Meiji Kenkaku Romantan) is a manga created by Nobuhiro
Watsuki that began publication in 1994. With over 72 million
copies in circulation, it follows Kenshin Himura, a former assassin
seeking redemption in the aftermath of the Meiji Restoration. The
story blends action, drama, and romance as Kenshin struggles to protect
the innocent.
- Over the years, the manga has
been adapted into a 95-episode anime, several anime films, an OVA, and
five live-action films. It also has a stage adaptation by the Takarazuka
Revue, a female theater troupe.
- The new television adaptation
of "Rurouni Kenshin" began in July 2023, airing on Fuji TV's
Noitamina channel. This adaptation has spanned two seasons so far, and
Crunchyroll is simulcasting it. The series re-adapts the
manga's main plot with modern animation.
- The anime is directed by Hideyo
Yamamoto , known for Strike the Blood and Hataraku Saibou Black ,
and produced by LIDEN FILMS studios . The script is
supervised by Hideyuki Kurata , while the character
designs are done by Terumi Nishii . The music is
in charge of Yuu Takami .
- Regarding the manga, Watsuki
launched a new arc called " Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc "
in 2017, but it was discontinued due to legal and health issues. Despite
these setbacks, Rurouni Kenshin remains an influential franchise that
attracts new fans with each new adaptation.
