This Wednesday,
June 19, the 29th issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen
Sunday magazine announced that the Kai-hen Wizards (Kaihen
no Mahōtsukai) manga, Yellow Tanabe's most recent work,
will go on hiatus as of June 25. The return of the series is
scheduled for sometime in the fall of 2025, on a date yet to be
confirmed.
A work that was barely taking off
The manga
had resumed publication on April 9, after a previous hiatus that
began on January 15. The series was originally launched on September
11, 2023, and in just a few months it managed to capture readers' attention
for its intriguing magical premise and signature narrative style.
The story
follows a boy forced to live in exile to prevent his extremely
dangerous magical powers from destroying the world. The work is
published simultaneously in English through Viz Media, which has
already released chapters in parallel with the Japanese edition. Shogakukan published
the second compilation volume on May 16.
Yellow
Tanabe: an author with a solid track record
Tanabe
achieved great popularity with Kekkaishi, a manga that was
serialized from 2003 to 2011 in the same magazine. The work
inspired a television anime that aired between 2006 and 2008, and
was subsequently released on DVD by Viz Media in 2011, and
on Blu-ray by Discotek Media in 2022.
The author
then published the manga Birdmen, which was in serialization
from July 2013 until its conclusion in February 2020.
With Kai-hen Wizards, Tanabe returned to shonen with a darker and
more fantastical approach, once again consolidating his style among old and new
fans.
Fans
will have to wait until autumn
Although
the specific reasons for this new hiatus have not been revealed, the work is
expected to return with a vengeance in the fall. Fans of Yellow Tanabe will
have to be patient to continue discovering the fate of this young wizard marked
by devastating power.
