The company Ishinomori Production surprised fans on July 19 by officially announcing the production of a new anime titled Cyborg 009 Nemesis. This new series will mark the return of the legendary manga created by Shotaro Ishinomori, considered one of the pillars of science fiction manga.

The announcement was made to coincide with the 61st anniversary of the original manga, which began publication on July 19, 1964, in Shonen Gahosha's Weekly King magazine. Through their social media, Ishinomori Production stated, "Today, July 19, is Cyborg Day 009. After celebrating their 60th anniversary, the cyborg soldiers will take a new step into the future. For more details, please look forward to further announcements."

A legacy that marked generations

Cyborg 009 is considered Shotaro Ishinomori's most iconic work, and its serialization continued intermittently until his death in 1988. Over the decades, the franchise has had multiple adaptations in television series and animated films, airing from 1966 to 2017.

One of the most remembered versions is the series Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier (2001–2002), which was released on Blu-ray by Discotek Media and had English dubbing. This adaptation focused on Joe Shimamura, an orphan with a turbulent past who wakes up as a cyborg with superhuman abilities. Along with eight other companions from different parts of the world, Joe becomes Cyborg 009 and joins the fight against Black Ghost, a ruthless weapons organization responsible for his modifications.

High expectations for a new era

While details about the plot, creative team, or release date of Cyborg 009 Nemesis have not yet been revealed, fans of the universe created by Ishinomori hope that this new production will live up to the legacy of the franchise. Given that the announcement came just after the 60th commemorative year, everything indicates that it will be an ambitious proposal that will seek to revive the relevance of the classic in the new generations.
