During the Newtype panel at Anime Expo, it was confirmed that the manga The Five Star Stories, the work of Mamoru Nagano, will be officially published in English by Newtype and Titan Manga from March 2026.
An
iconic manga with an intermittent trajectory
This
science and fantasy manga began serialization in Kadokawa's Newtype magazine
in 1986, although its publication has been irregular over the years. To
celebrate the 25th anniversary in 2011, Kadokawa released a special edition
called "Repeat," which included never-before-released art.
After a
hiatus in 2006, the manga returned in May 2013, but was halted again in 2014
while Nagano prepared the thirteenth volume, which finally went on sale in
August 2016, after several delays. The 18th volume, the most recent, was
released on March 10, 2023.
The epic
story of The Five Star Stories
The plot
takes place thousands of years in the future, in the Joker galaxy made up of
five star systems, where an endless war pits the god of light, Amaterasu,
against each other, who seeks to unify the galaxy under his command. The
pilots, known as Headdliners, fight in gigantic mechs called Mortar
Headds and have been trained since birth for war. These battles also
feature the presence of the Fatimas, female companions in human
form who function as computers.
Publications
and the author's good legacy
Nagano-owned publisher
Toyspress, Inc. published much of the manga in English, while ADV
Films released the 1989 animated film adaptation in North America. In
addition, in 2006 Nagano worked on Hana no Utame Gothicmade, a film
he wrote, designed, storyboarded and directed personally, released in Japan in
2012.
