Aniplex announced that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle – Akaza Sairai, the first installment in the new film trilogy, has sold more than 9.1 million tickets and generated 12.87 billion yen (approximately $87.1 million) in its first 10 days in theaters.

The film has set a new record in Japan, becoming the fastest film to surpass 10 billion yen, a mark it reached in just 8 days. With this, it surpasses the legendary Mugen Train, which had held that achievement since 2020 and remains the highest-grossing film in the history of Japanese cinema.

A historic opening that leaves Mugen Train behind

Infinity Castle - Akaza Sairai has surpassed all previous records in terms of opening:

  • Best opening weekend (comparing four-day versus three-day openings)
  • Best first day: 1,155,637 admissions and 1.646 billion yen (about $11.1 million) on July 18
  • Best Single Day: 1,421,804 entries and more than 2.037 billion yen ($13.7 million) on July 20

In its first three days, the film sold 3.84 million tickets and grossed 5.524 billion yen (about $37.4 million). With the Japanese holiday on July 21, it closed the long weekend with 5.16 million tickets and 7.315 billion yen in total (approximately $49.5 million).

International expansion and more records to break

The film is being screened in 443 theaters in Japan, including IMAX screens, a record number for the franchise. Internationally, Aniplex plans to take the film to more than 150 countries, surpassing the previous global tour.

In the United States and Canada, it will be released on September 12 in theaters with premium formats and Japanese versions with English subtitles and English dubbing, thanks to the collaboration between large companies.
