AoButa:
Rascal Does Not Dream would
be close to saying goodbye definitively. According to insider SugoiLite,
the Seishun Buta Yarou franchise will have a sequel
film that will adapt the last two volumes of the light novel, thus
closing the main story on the big screen.
AoButa
and his path to the end
The brand
has been betting on the film format for years. After a first season in 2018
that became a teen romantic comedy phenomenon, the franchise went on to release
several films that adapted different arcs of Hajime Kamoshida's work.
This move, although profitable, also complicated the follow-up of the series
internationally, where premieres often arrived in a limited or late way.
Was
cinema the best option?
Although AoButa found
in the film a more colorful vehicle, not all fans were satisfied. Many consider
that the episodic format favored more narrative and allowed anime to establish
itself as a reference title instead of losing traction with fragmented
releases. The leak of a final film fuels precisely this
debate: is the franchise saying goodbye on a high or will it remain as a wasted
opportunity?
What
remains to be adapted
With the
most recent season already on air, the work will be left with only two volumes
pending of the light novel. According to the leak, it will be this future film
that collects that material and puts an end to the story of Sakuta
Azusagawa and Mai Sakurajima. At the moment there are no
production details or tentative dates, although everything indicates that it
would not be released before the second half of 2026.
