An unmistakable voice that marked generations of anime and video game fans has faded. The talent agency Arts Vision announced on Monday the death of veteran voice actor Tomomichi Nishimura, which occurred on November 29 at the age of 79. According to the statement, his family has already held a private funeral. The actor's health had been a cause for concern since September 22, when the agency reported that he would be taking a break from work due to medical problems.
From Professor Anzai to the fists of Street Fighter
Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1946, Nishimura left an indelible legacy. He is arguably best remembered for his fatherly and wise role as coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai (the "White-haired Buddha") in the anime series Slam Dunk. However, his acting range was impressive, going from the calm of Anzai to the fury of iconic villains in the Street Fighter video games, where he voiced M. Bison (known as Vega in Japan) and the fearsome Akuma (Goki).
A prolific career
Their credit history is extensive and includes:
- Jamitov Hyman in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
- Mike in the anime Ojarumaru.
- Shibaraku in Chō Mashin Eiyūden Wataru.
- The Japanese dub of Al Robbins in the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
Rest in peace, sensei. Thank you for teaching us that we shouldn't give up until the game is over.
