The entertainment industry received devastating
news after confirming the death of artist Keiko Okamoto, recognized
mainly for her impeccable work in the manga adaptation of the fantasy novel
series Ochikobore Hoketsu Reijo wa Tsumetai Koushaku kara Nigedashitai (The
Dropout Substitute Lady Wants to Escape From the Cold Duke). According to
the official statement shared by her relatives, the author left completely
unexpectedly on May 6, 2026 due to a brain hemorrhage. Her close circle
extended a heartfelt apology to followers for the delay in reporting the event,
explaining that they needed to spend time in strict privacy to process the pain
before sharing it publicly.
Through an emotional farewell letter, the
mangaka's family recalled the infinite passion that Okamoto felt for his
profession and drawing. In her daily conversations, she always expressed a
fervent desire to continue creating, to constantly improve herself and to give
life to bright worlds that not only made her happy, but could serve as an
emotional support for anyone who was going through a difficult time, giving
back a little of the strength that manga itself gave her in her youth.
The author used to proudly repeat a phrase that
completely defined her path: "Manga is the only thing I know how to
do", even assuring that, if she had the opportunity to reincarnate in
another life, she would choose without hesitation to become a manga artist
again. Her loved ones described Keiko as a noble, kind person, with a great
sense of humor and full of love for her family, her friends and her beloved
dog, expressing their wish that readers continue to enjoy her pages as the best
possible tribute to her memory. They also deeply thanked all the attendees, editors
and fans who supported her throughout her professional career.

Nigedashitai also issued an official statement expressing its deepest

dedication and immense affection with which the artist treated each of her
characters until their last days of life, polishing each chapter with
impeccable care. The team was infinitely grateful for her invaluable
contributions to the project and extended its gratitude to all the fans who
faithfully accompanied the printed releases by the author's hand.

void, but their works remain as eternal windows to their mind, their effort and
their heart.
