The Japan Film Producers Association (MPPA) reported on Monday that twelve of the top film distributors raised 688 million yen (about $ 6.40 million) in the box office in April. This represents a decrease of 96.3% compared to the same month last year, and the lowest amount ever seen since the association was founded in 2000 and in the film industry in general.

Movie box office earnings in the first week of April compared to the same period last year fell 90%, and theaters closed in mid-April after Japan declared a state of emergency was but a detonating. The MPPA reported that cinema revenues across Japan "approached zero" in the second half of April.

Last weekend, one hundred Japanese theaters reopened their facilities. With the release of several major new movies delayed, the top nine movies aired in theaters this week include nine previously released, such as Tenki no Ko, Kimi no Na wa, Shin Godzilla, and Akira's 4K remastering.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe officially confirmed the lifting of the state of emergency in 39 prefectures of the country last Thursday. The eight prefectures that remain in a state of emergency include Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, Hyogo, and Hokkaido.
