The dark fantasy story Kokuen no Ō Zelk (Zelk, the Lord of the Black Flame), created by Hideaki Yoshikawa, will end with the publication of its second compilation volume. Several Japanese retailers have listed this volume as the last in the series, thus marking an early closure for this work that mixed science, action and supernatural powers.

A world ravaged by monsters and dark flames

The manga follows the story of Natsuki, a lovable-looking young man who visits a tech park with his older neighbor, Nanaka. What seemed like a normal excursion takes an unexpected turn when the sky opens up and a flaming black sphere falls on him, knocking him unconscious. Upon awakening five years later, he discovers a world ravaged by monsters and a completely different Nanaka, now part of a group of survivors.

Natsuki has also changed: she has awakened a dark power that allows her to summon black flames. With this new gift, he begins a journey in search of restoring the world he knew.

A quick closure to an intense story

Kokuen no Ō Zelk was originally released on February 26 on Square Enix's Manga UP! platform. The first compilation volume is scheduled to go on sale on July 7, while the second and last will mark the outcome of the work.

Hideaki Yoshikawa is also known for adapting Rui Tsukiyo's light novel series Dungeon Builder: The Demon King's Labyrinth is a Modern City! into a manga, which was published on Overlap's Comic Gardo website from March 2018 to February of this year, completing a total of 12 volumes. This work was licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.
