During Anime
Expo 2025, acclaimed animation studio Studio Trigger confirmed
the production of a new series titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
This new installment will be a standalone story of 10 episodes, set
in the dystopian universe of Cyberpunk 2077, and will be available
through Netflix globally.
The
direction of this sequel will be in charge of Kai Ikarashi, who
worked on the first series as a storyboard artist, animation director, animator
and object designer. This will be his debut as a principal conductor.
In addition, key figures such as Bartosz Sztybor (original
producer and screenwriter), Ichigo Kanno as lead character
designer, and Masahiko Otsuka in the script return.
A raw
story of redemption and revenge
The new
series will offer a completely new narrative, with tinges of revenge
and redemption. According to the production team, this will be an intense
chronicle of what needs to be done to stand out in a world where spectacle is
everything. Although concrete details about the characters or the plot have not
yet been revealed, a story is anticipated that will maintain the dark
and visceral tone that characterized its predecessor.
During the
Studio Trigger panel at the event, an exclusive preview was screened behind
closed doors for attendees, raising expectations around this production.
A
franchise that continues to expand
Cyberpunk:
Edgerunners was
released in September 2022 and was critically acclaimed thanks
to its impactful animation and deep narrative. Based on CD PROJEKT
RED's Cyberpunk 2077 video game, the series also takes
inspiration from the tabletop role-playing game created by Mike
Pondsmith.
In addition
to anime, the franchise continues to grow with the manga Cyberpunk:
Edgerunners Madness, created by artist Asano and
screenwriter Bartosz Sztybor. This manga is published on the
Comic Alive+ site and is being translated into seven languages,
including an English version by Dark Horse.
On the
other hand, Aniplex of America will release a Blu-ray edition
of the first series on October 28 in North America. It is also
planned for physical distribution in Europe, Australia and New Zealand
through Anime Limited, Plaion Pictures and Sugoi Co,
respectively.
With a new
series on the way, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners reaffirms its place
as one of the most innovative projects within contemporary anime.
