The Oshi platform announced that the franchise GATE: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri will return with a new animated series titled GATE 2: Tides of Conflict, which will adapt the novels of the so-called "second season" written by Takumi Yanai. This new installment will focus its story on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in a new mission within the fantasy universe that characterizes the work.

A preliminary design of the new character Hajime Tokushima, exclusive to the production, was presented along with the announcement.

A production with big names

The new series will be directed by Tōru Takahashi (Orphen: The Revenge, Inari Kon Kon) under the animation of Studio M2. The script will be written by Tatsuhiko Urahata, who returns after working on the first adaptation. Shigeru Fujita (Monster, Pluto) will be in charge of character design. The production is by Kasagi LaboOshi and GENCO.

In addition, Oshi will allow fans to actively participate in the development of the series through its platform, which promises exclusive access to behind-the-scenes content and a collaborative experience between creators, licensees, and fans.

A new mission in the world of GATE

The story of GATE 2 begins with the reopening of the mysterious "GATE". Amid new diplomatic tensions in the Special Region, an American journalist is kidnapped in its waters.

An elite squadron of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force is sent to execute a dangerous rescue mission. This new saga promises more action, politics and fantasy in a parallel world to ours.

A franchise with history and evolution

The light novel series GATE SEASON2: Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri was published between 2017 and 2020 in five volumes. A bunkoban edition was released between 2020 and 2022 with illustrations by Kurojishi, who also illustrated the special edition of the first series.

The original story was serialized by Yanai on the Arcadia website between 2006 and 2009. AlphaPolis subsequently published five main volumes and five additional volumes between 2010 and 2015. The first anime adaptation arrived in 2015 and its second season in 2016, both available on Crunchyroll and released in physical format by Sentai Filmworks. The official manga, illustrated by Satoru Sao, has been published since 2011 on the AlphaPolis website. The publisher also publishes the manga in English currently.

In addition to this sequel, Yanai also wrote the prequel series GATE 0, made up of two volumes published between December 2021 and August 2022. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Ryohichi Saitaniya, has been published since March 2024 on AlphaPolis, where it is still ongoing.
