The closure
of Jujutsu Kaisen in September 2024 left the fandom with mixed
feelings. After a conclusion that many described as hasty, mangaka Gege
Akutami surprised just a year later with the announcement of Jujutsu
Kaisen Modulo, a sequel that presents the grandchildren of Yuta
Okkotsu and Maki Zen'in facing a new world full of
threats... and aliens.
Was a
sequel necessary?
The doubt
arises because the original manga did not leave so many loose ends as to demand
an immediate continuation. While the Jujutsu universe has a rich background and
a lot of potential, some fans feel that the sequel may dilute what was already
well resolved. The comparison with cases like Boruto was not
long in coming: expanding a masterpiece can be a double-edged sword.
What
Modulo proposes
The new
work poses a futuristic scenario, with the descendants of iconic characters
carrying a complicated legacy. In addition, it introduces the threat of
the Simurian, an alien race that seems to have ties to the cursed
powers. While the idea is ambitious, the fear of many readers is that this
"new air" will feel more like commercial exploitation than a natural
development of the story.
A risk
and an opportunity
From the
market's perspective, the move was almost inevitable. Jujutsu Kaisen is
still a cultural and economic phenomenon, and betting on more material is
guaranteed to keep interest alive. However, the big question is whether Gege
Akutami will manage to maintain the essence and narrative quality, or
if the result will end up disappointing those who value what made the original
work so special.
