After Death Note and One Piece, Netflix is once
again betting on adapting a Japanese property to live-action, and this time
it's Persona's turn. According to a report from Variety, the
project is currently in development with Christopher Monfette serving
as writer, showrunner, and one of several executive producers.
Monfette has previous credits on the television
series 9-1-1 and Star Trek: Picard. The only Japanese
executive producer confirmed so far is Toru Nakahara, who serves as Sega's
point of contact for its Hollywood initiatives, including projects such as
the Sonic the Hedgehog films. The detail that generated the
most conversation is that seven of the eight executive producers listed are not
Japanese, which according to the report suggests that the series will probably
not be set in Japan, despite the fact that the Persona games take place there.
The question the article raises is
straightforward: Could changing the setting away from the Japanese high school
environment affect how fans connect with the story and characters? Persona's
structure, which combines everyday life in school environments with fantastical
and psychedelic elements, could translate relatively well to live-action if the
right balance is maintained, allowing the visuals to be concentrated on the
games' most distinctive supernatural sequences.
It's still unclear which specific installment
of the franchise Netflix will adapt. Each numbered Persona title functions as a
standalone story with its own characters and plots, even though they share core
mechanics and themes. Persona 5 was originally released in 2016, an
updated version of Persona 4 is slated for 2027, and Persona 6 was
announced in development last month. The report notes that producing a
live-action series alongside the release of a new mainline game could divide
the public's attention, making an existing title a more practical option for
coordinated promotion.
The article also draws comparisons with
previous Netflix adaptations: the decision to set Death Note outside of Japan
was not well received by many who knew the original material, while the
live-action One Piece series had a warmer reception than expected. According to
the report, the success of a Persona adaptation could depend on how much of its
distinctive identity and tone manages to be preserved even if the scenario
changes.
About Persona
Persona is a role-playing video game
franchise developed by Sega-owned Atlus, known for combining the everyday
lives of Japanese students with battles against supernatural entities through
psychological personifications known as "Personas". The series has
become one of the most influential Japanese role-playing franchises outside of
Japan thanks to its art direction, soundtrack, and narrative focused on themes
of identity and personal growth. Persona 5, the most recent numbered
installment, is considered one of the franchise's highest points in terms of
international popularity.
