Otaku ni Yasashii Designer Gal wa Inai Will No Longer Accept Anime Projects

Massive success within the anime industry comes at a pretty high price, and sometimes it's paid for with a completely collapsed schedule. Talented character designer Lion Matsuda, who recently rose to absolute stardom thanks to her impeccable visual work in the hit romantic comedy Otaku ni Yasashii Gal wa Inai!? (Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!?), has just stopped the Japanese studios in their tracks by publicly confirming that she will reject any kind of new job offer in the near future.

The illustrator did not mince words when explaining her situation. Through a direct statement, Matsuda confessed that his delivery schedule is saturated to the limit of his capacities with projects that he already has underway. Very politely, she asked the different production committees and future clients to please contact her again in a year and a half or even two years, when her tremendous workload finally allows her to breathe and accept new commissions without compromising the quality of her art. To soften the blow of this news, she took the moment to share a couple of amazing illustrations from her personal portfolio, making it clear why Japan is lining up to hire her.

To understand why this artist became so in demand, just look at her recent resume. Matsuda shone brightly during the spring 2026 season as the in-demand Lead Designer and Chief Animation Director for Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!?, as well as having previously made her mark by bringing talent to the likes of Reborn to Master the Blade. Her clean strokes, vibrant expressions and that clinical eye for illustrating fashionable clothing and accessories made her one of the most sought-after creatives of the moment. This strategic pause demonstrates an enviable professional maturity to avoid the dreaded physical and mental wear and tear that plagues the Japanese environment so much.

Seeing how Japan's most talented creatives end up with their schedules blocked for years due to sky-high demand
