Creating
the perfect romantic comedy requires a lot more than imagination, especially
when editors tell you to your face that your stories don't have an ounce of
realism. That is the premise with which the animated adaptation of Now That
We Draw (Kakunaru Ue wa) starts, a project that has just presented
its first complete trailer along with the visual designs of its protagonists,
confirming in passing that its premiere will hit the screens in January 2027.
The first
video trailer allowed us to see the main couple in action and hear for the
first time the performances of their stellar cast. Renowned actor Ayumu
Murase will take on the role of the insecure Yuki Uehara, while Sayumi
Suzushiro will lend his voice to the outgoing and popular Niina Miyamoto.
Both will give life to a chaotic relationship born of pure desperation to
improve their drawing skills and understand how love works in real life.
The
animation is in charge of the ROLL2 studio with the direction of Shunsuke
Ishikawa. The supervision and writing of the scripts is in the hands of the
experienced Deko Akao, while Hiromi Nakagawa is in charge of
adapting the design of the characters for the screen. The team is completed
with the sound direction of Fumiyuki Go, the sound effects of Ryuta
Nakahara, the soundtrack composed by Yoshiaki Miura and the executive
production by the company Infinite.
Written by Kyu
Takahata and illustrated by Yuji Kaba, the original manga began
publication in the pages of Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine in 2023,
managing to build a loyal community thanks to its fresh focus on couples with
shared creative interests.
The plot
follows Yuki Uehara, a lonely student who dreams of becoming a manga author and
believes he has designed the perfect heroine for his work: shy, absent-minded
and unattainable. However, one publisher destroys his illusion by calling his
draft trite and unrealistic. In the midst of her crisis, Yuki crosses paths
with Niina Miyamoto, the most beautiful girl in her class, who also aspires to
publish her own stories and received the exact same destructive criticism.
Since neither of them has any romantic experience, Niina proposes to start a
fake relationship to inspire each other, unleashing a constant clash between
their fictional ideals and chaotic reality.
